TST (Teaching for Studio Thinking) 7085 50 ideas

50 ideas
(DISCLAIMER)  I had this beautifully laid out on pages, but the copy and paste method seems to have taken on a life of its own.....  so forgive the random nature of the numbers...I tried to change it but the program would not allow this so alas, it is what it is.

The first bunch have more description and as the list continues, the words are more thematic in nature and could fit into the medium and bigger ideas of the first dozen or so.  Also, I have sub categories under some,.

1. Manifestation: On going series of evolving images relevant to personal life events and how I want to shape the reality which I live in. Narratives/ charcoal.  BIG * current pieces are from the theme... Weaving the universe
  1. Appropriation: (I constantly do this) anyway  combining unlike images to recreate realities. Visual journal/altered book: Any of the themes further down the list can work with this.
  1. Exchange journal.. Dialog in the space between a visual exchange. A project which involves more than one artist.  HOW FUN would it be to do this in a class, we each start with a journal (which we will then end up with) and as the class progresses, the journals are exchanged and worked in, in response to previous entries....
  2. Collaborative piece: group responding to a singe question with in a single large composition

  1. Juxtaposition: Contrasting events with what is happening on the outside with that which is true with in. Any medium.... Thinking charcoal -

  1. Memory: The fluidity of memory and how events experienced at one point in time are then perceived differently as the older you looks back... Layering, transparencies, paint and collage, using some subtractive methods

  1. Ritual: Symbolic totems, objects of power. Found objects, altering to make personal-

  1. Myth: Including story and the word to examine belief. Collage/ mixed media, working in layers, could also be journal.

  1. Environment #1:  Glass worlds, the intricacies of tine plants, murrini, building from the inside out. (Hot glass)

  1. Environment/Time #2: Photo montage, narratives of moments in space and time captured in a singular over lapping moment. (re-occurring people)
  1. Capturing a space through out the day expanding the moment so that lighting
and mood alter with the passage or time. (re-occurring space)

  1. Environment #3: Transforming Space.  My house is an evolving art work. (Stained glass windows to alter the feeling of a room with prism and color.)

  1. Koi No Yokan (Japanese) (theme for a drawing)
The sense upon first meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall in love.

11. Mamihlapinatapai (Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego)This word captures that special look shared between two people, when both are wishing that the other would do something that they both want, but neither want to do * Want to incorporate this concept with several others into a larger piece from #1.
  1. Spirit of place A: Mosaic: kitchen tile mosaic capturing the spirit of room
  2. Spirit of place B: Mosaic with students in an apprentice like creation in the school
  3. Betrayal: Mixing word with image? .. Playing with perception and how one expression maybe interpreted completely different than intended

TST (Teaching for Studio Thinking) 7085 #3

#3
Globalization

To me this means the expansion of experience and influence beyond ones immediate culture and context. I would imagine the more we “travel” through communities and interact with others, the more we are impacted by the people in those communities who come to them rich with their own travels, sharing and influencing each person around them.
Aweiwei  to me is a beautiful example of how he uses art to make statements bout the Chinese culture and then works hard to get the message out in spite of his home country wishing it did not.  Globalization in terms of technology has made this possible for him, and likely kept him alive.
The concept to me represents the expansion and accessibility of other cultural art as well as the combining of multicultural ideas.

Just a reminder:

TST (Teaching for Studio Thinking) 7085 #2

#2 CONCEPTUAL ART

This is tricky because my own interpretation of this idea differs a bit from the way the author talks about it.  I tend to think that any creation is conceptual to one degree or another. What is the same though is that idea precedes expression, or as Poussin said “Able men must work with their intellects, that is, they must conceive before hand what they want to do”.
There can be tremendous ambiguity in “conceptual art” because the artist is operating on an idea, and that idea is inherent to the artists experiences and perceptions of the world which are unique to them.  There is great potential in this because for each person who comes to see the work will bring an element of their own perception and experience and therefore, the art creates a unique experience for each viewer.  This is one of the things about art I love, that we each have our own experience. That said, the artist working with a specific idea has to make a choice about how clearly they wish their idea to be expressed if they are concerned about a specific message coming across, their “conceptual idea” per say.
My own work (series) is held together by a larger conceptual idea (manifestation), it is the umbrella under which many pieces are realized (or manifested... Ha ha ha ), while each piece may be a strand of that concept, it is realizing itself in different ways.

SERIES

There is a difference between Series and Sequence, although a sequence is often a series of "something" a series is not necessarily a sequence.   It depends on its purpose.  The concept of narrative can be inserted here. Is the narrative a "sequential story", one event dependent on another, or a related idea, perhaps connected in other ways? Picasso's " Guernica"  comes to mind when I think of a series which is also a sequence...
The intention originating in the idea of any series partially defines how the piece might  be experienced.  "The connecting concept bigger than any individual work" strikes a familiar cord for me. I tend to work with in this idea regardless of what medium I use. It is rare I have had the opportunity to see a whole body of my work in one place to fully feel the impact of the whole. (part of this is because I work large with some of my work). That said, although I am a proponent of a piece standing on its own regardless, the thought of a whole series up on display makes me smile.
When I think of series I associate that thought also with the passage of time.  I probably have  several series of drawings Ive done over the past 25 years which are a series's  of series. The thread which connects them all is the material and the evolution of a specific image which has appeared and evolved in my work for more than half my life. What individuates the groups of "series" are the ideas and motivations behind each group, which again evolved organically as I grew as a human.
Another artist whose work I drool over is a mentor of mine.  Each of his individual works is an exquisite universe in glass, yet, to see a collection of them in one place is awe inspiring. (Paul Stankard) On their own, they stand as individual pieces, together they create almost like a community. :)
As artists, an awareness of what were up to creates ties between idea and expression. When ideas evolve and grow as image emerges, the opportunity for series presents itself.  ....

Creative Wall update

With a new term just starting, the momentum we had going was put on hold...  This is a photo from a week ago, more has occurred since then.  Students (myself included) are collaborating, and discussion on how to move forward to pull the piece together is on going.  They have been speaking to the "business" of the piece and have decided that using some collaged black and white (ish) newspaper in the remaining white ares may help anchor the existing colorful images.  We shall see!

Another for the studio assignment/update on creativity wall

This is likely as far as Ill get this term with the orbs although I will continue to cook ideas.  It felt good to indulge in my glass work again.

And the wall continues to grow!
