Narrative Blog #4
This is one of my favorites for this quote by Bird (pg. 20) says it all “ Visual Narrative can side step the story tellers reliance on before and after by conflating time-sequenced events in a single scene.” I LOVE this because the absence of time allows for the inclusion of all time. Story’s become rich weavings with layers of meaning which embrace the before, during and after all in a single “place”. It is a sub theme to just about all my drawings.
Faith Ringold is an artist I often use with my classroom to illustrate this idea of timelessness in a single visual composition. She combines her childhood with current events to construct a rich narrative. The technique of placing the “protagonist” in the composition several times at different stages of life makes the narrative wildly interesting to deconstruct.
