TST (Teaching for Studio Thinking) 7085 #5 Authenticity

Authenticity, Blog #5

Bird repeatedly links authenticity with “Faith”.  Faith is an interesting “concept”.  For me it ties in closely of course, with belief.  If one believes something is true, is it?
The examples of the “Artists Shit” (Piero Manzoni’s set of 90 tin cans 1961) is an interesting example.  When presented one way, a belief was formed based on faith, and “perception”  A shift in that perception radically altered the viewers idea of authenticity.  SO is authenticity an idea about something or the concrete object which embodies that idea?   Can art be authentic to one and not to another?  Who gets to decide?  The artist or the viewer? Is it important that there is uniform belief in the authenticity of a piece for it to have merit and value?
For my own art, authenticity means the idea came from with in me and I remained true to it and did not alter it to fit the “perceptions” ‘Beliefs” “faiths” etc of another.  I am responsible for my own inner authentic response.
